Gaza standoff drags on

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- A deadline by militants holding anIsraeli soldier expired early today with no sign that Israel wasconsidering giving in to the demand to release prisoners and no wordabout the soldier's fate from the captors.

The Hamas-linked militants set a 6 a.m. deadline in Gaza forIsrael to begin freeing the prisoners, implying they would kill thesoldier if their demands were not met.

The spokesman for one of the Hamas-linked groups holding anIsraeli soldier said today that because Israel ignored a deadline torelease Palestinian prisoners, the militants won't release anyinformation about the soldier.

Excitation Energy Transfer Pathways in Lhca4

ABSTRACT

EET in reconstituted Lhca4, a peripheral light-harvesting complex from Photosystem I of Arabidopsis thaliana, containing 10 chlorophylls and 2 carotenoids, was studied at room temperature by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Two spectral forms of Lut were observed in the sites L1 and L2, characterized by significantly different interactions with nearby chlorophyll a molecules. A favorable interpretation of these differences is that the efficiency of EET to Chls is about two times lower from the "blue" Lut in the site L1 than from the "red" Lut in the site L2 due to fast IC in the former case. A major part of the energy absorbed by the "red" Lut, ~60%-70%, is …

A WHIFF OF JAVA IN THE AIR.(News Briefs)

* Corel recently started shipping its first Linux product, a port of its venerable WordPerfect application. It's not the first time the company has tried to boost the profile of WordPerfect by launching it on a hot new platform: Corel Office for Java went through several beta releases before being abandoned a couple of years ago. When the Corel CEO announced the Linux version, many within the organisation thought it might go the same way. For instance, at the time of the announcement there was no product manager in charge of the Linux port, nor any other infrastructure in place to see it safely to market. One Corel employee was overheard approaching another, sniffing the air and asking, "do you smell Java?"

* If you think you've ever had a rough time getting support from vendors or the IT people in your organisation, spare a thought for a bus driver in Eastern Europe we read about. Having obtained a …

Rangers 2

BUFFALO - Thomas Vanek and the Buffalo Sabres sure looked like the cream of the crop Wednesday night.

Vanek scored twice, sparking a three-goal second period, and Ryan Miller stopped 32 shots in a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series opener. Jason Pominville and Ales Kotalik also scored for a Buffalo team that played much better after struggling to eliminate the New York Islanders in five games in the first round.

The Sabres were particularly motivated after Rangers coach Tom Renney said this week that top-seeded Buffalo …

SEWAGE STATION TO END ODORS.(Local)

Byline: Mark J. McGuire Staff writer

The foul odors that periodically invade the Sherwood Park area should dissipate to memory by later this month, when the town is scheduled to complete its new sewage pump station.

The Corliss Avenue pump station is being replaced as part of an $11.6 million project to upgrade its sewers and the Routes 9 and 20 treatment plant.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has been to the pump station several times for reports of foul smells, the last call Aug. 25.

"There was an overflow," said town Public Works Commissioner Thomas D. DeJulio. "There was some spillage."

FDA warns about fraudulent cancer treatments

The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on teas, supplements, creams and other products that falsely claim to cure, treat or prevent cancer even though they are not agency-approved drugs. All are available for sale on the Internet.

The agency has sent 25 warning letters to companies and individuals marketing these products, FDA officials said Tuesday. Twenty-three of the letters went to domestic companies and two to foreign individuals.

FDA officials said the statements made about these products are dangerous because they could prevent a patient from seeking proper treatment for cancer. They could also harm a cancer patient by interacting with …
