* Corel recently started shipping its first Linux product, a port of its venerable WordPerfect application. It's not the first time the company has tried to boost the profile of WordPerfect by launching it on a hot new platform: Corel Office for Java went through several beta releases before being abandoned a couple of years ago. When the Corel CEO announced the Linux version, many within the organisation thought it might go the same way. For instance, at the time of the announcement there was no product manager in charge of the Linux port, nor any other infrastructure in place to see it safely to market. One Corel employee was overheard approaching another, sniffing the air and asking, "do you smell Java?"
